DJI Avata 2

This blog is brought to you by Drone Class, your drone trainer for flying in the open and specific category.

DJI has launched its latest FPV drone, the DJI Avata 2. This is the third generation ready to fly FPV drone. DJI's latest FPV drone comes with a number of improvements in image quality and ease of use and is C1 labelled. In this blog, we list all the new specifications.

Improved video quality and stabilisation

Now, DJI has improved video quality. The DJI Avata 2 is equipped with a 1/1.3-inch CMOS video sensor and can record in 4k/60fps. This larger sensor allows the camera to capture more light, making your footage sharper and more detailed. The 10-bit D-Log M colour profile gives you more options while editing images.

Images from the DJI Avata 2 are stabilised with RockSteady3.0+ and HorizonSteady. This software ensures smooth, stabilised recordings, even at high speeds.

Advanced FPV flight goggles and controllers

DJI Goggles 3 displays the camera image from the DJI Avata 2 in 1080/100 fps or 1080/60 fps. A new feature on the DJI Goggles 3 is Real View PiP (picture in picture). This will display the drone's camera image in the environment you are flying in. This new feature means you no longer need to bring an observer with you as you can fly the drone in sight.

While it comes to controlling the drone, there are two options:

  • DJI FPV Remote controller 3
Control via the DJI remote controller follows the familiar sticks and buttons.
  • DJI Motion controller 3
Converts movements of your hand and wrist into control signals for the drone.

The FPV Remote controller 3 is intended for pilots, who prefer to control a drone with two sticks. Our experience with the Motion controller has been positive.

FPV drone flying with ease thanks to flight modes

The various flight modes make the DJI Avata 2 a perfect drone for novice FPV drone pilots. The controller features a Return to Home button. There are further options to quickly switch between the different flight modes. Finally, an Emergency brake and Hover button are present.

The DJI Avata 2 introduces Easy ACRO mode. At the touch of a button, the DJI Avata 2 makes advanced FPV manoeuvres such as:

  • One-push Flip
Perform a 360° forward or backward flip, giving a fresh twist to your footage.
  • One-Push Roll
Roll 360° left or right, transforming every shot from 'ordinary' to 'magical'.
  • One-Push 180° Drift
Make high-speed side drifts followed by a 180° yaw-spin past objects and fast retraction, for dramatic effect.

This means you don't have to be as good at flying. The challenge for advanced pilots, of course, is to be able to perform these stunts manually.

FPV Drone with C1 tag

The DJI Avata 2 is DJI's first FPV drone with a Cx label. This brings a number of advantages. The DJI FPV and first-generation DJI Avata do not have a Cx label. This means that these drones may only be flown in subcategory A3, at 150 metres away from buildings and people.

The DJI FPV and first-generation DJI Avata do not have a Cx label.

The DJI Avata 2 has a C1 label. This means that this drone can fly in subcategory A1 s. Flying over buildings and over a single uninvolved person is allowed, provided the requirements of subcategory A1 are met. Therefore, the flight must always be conducted in uncontrolled airspace. The pilot has registered as an operator and the pilot holds an A1/A3 certificate.

The C1 label gives drone pilots access to more locations voror creating dynamic FPV images. A much-needed upgrade, we think.

DJI Avata versus DJI Avata 2

The DJI Avata 2 is DJI's third-generation FPV drone. The table below shows the main differences between the earlier version DJI Avata and the latest DJI Avata 2.

Another difference is the sound of both devices. The Avata produces more noise. With the DJI Avata 2, this is clearly reduced.

The main improvements at a glance:

  • C1 label
  • Revised flight modes
  • Improved video quality
  • DJI Goggles 3 with Real View PiP

DJI has again done its best to bring a fantastic FPV drone to the market in the form of the DJI Avata 2. The big selling point of this drone is its C1 label. With the revamped flight modes, novice and experienced FPV drone pilots can shoot FPV footage with ease. At the touch of a button, the drone performs acrobatic manoeuvres that make for spectacular footage.
