What you need to fly in Hungary
Three things make your flight legal. Two are formalities — the license is the one that takes a few hours, and you can get it entirely online.
1. EU Drone License (A1-A3)
Required for every drone from 250 g. Online course + official exam, average ~4 hours. Valid in Hungary and all 30 European countries for 5 years.
2. Operator registration (the aviation authority (Transport Authority))
Usually the trickiest step for travelling pilots. Register once as an operator in your EASA country of residence and put the number on your drone — that registration is valid in Hungary too. Local pilots register via the aviation authority (Transport Authority).
3. Liability insurance
Hungary requires liability insurance for drones above 250 g maximum take-off mass, with minimum coverage set by government decree. Check your policy before you fly.
The rules while flying
These EU-wide basics apply in Hungary — plus the local details on the right.
Specific to Hungary
- Every drone must be entered in the authority's registry regardless of weight — stricter than the EU baseline
- The MyDroneSpace app (HungaroControl) is the official airspace channel — use it before every takeoff
- Flying over populated areas requires ad-hoc segregated airspace ('eseti légtér'), applied for well in advance
- Liability insurance is mandatory above 250 g take-off mass
- Registration runs via the aviation authority (Transport Authority under the ministry) — not via MyDroneSpace
You can still get licensed before your trip.
The average pilot finishes the course and exam in ~4 hours, fully online. Pass today and your official EU certificate lands in your inbox — valid in Hungary and 29 other countries for 5 years.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a license for a DJI Mini (under 250 g) in Hungary?
No EU license is needed under 250 g, but Hungary requires every drone to be entered in the authority's registry regardless of weight — and every flight starts with a MyDroneSpace check.
Is my EU Drone License from another country valid in Hungary?
Yes. The EU Drone License is valid in all EU countries plus Norway, Iceland and Switzerland — one license covers all 30 countries.
Can I fly over Budapest?
Flying over populated areas in Hungary requires ad-hoc segregated airspace, applied for well in advance — spontaneous city flights are not possible.
What is MyDroneSpace?
MyDroneSpace is HungaroControl's official drone airspace app — it shows where you may fly and handles flight check-ins. Note: drone registration itself runs via the aviation authority, not the app.
